Sunglasses

Manila Standard Today, Life & Entertainment | April 27, 2009

One of the most important summer accessories is the sunglasses. Wearing the most fashionable shades that suit your bone structure is a great way to stand out. And did I mention that they also protect our eyes from the sun? Enough with the intro; here are today’s most eye-catching (pun intended) specs for the sunshiny days:

1. Maison Martin Margiela L’incognito—When they said “sci fi,” they weren’t being ironic. These glasses really look like the ones from Star Trek and they’re one of the best weird things to come out this year.

2. Dior Hommes Blow—In five flashy colorways, these limited-edition shades (only 500 per colorway are produced) are so hot and uber-metrosexual. Who knew that there would be a time so fashionable that sunglasses like these would actually be marketed to men?

3. Mackdaddy Line Shades—The single-lens sunnies have officially infiltrated mainstream fashion. These are not as severe as the Margiela ones. The sleeker frames envelop a two-tone lens and the arms look more sunglasses-like.

4. Chanel Pearl Collection—This eyewear is literally adorned with pearls seamlessly embedded in the frame. Need I say more?

5. Stupidiotic Black Bar—These silly little things are patterned after the black bars that cover the eyes of people in pictures to protect their identity. Yes, sunglasses can actually do that right now. But they really do look stupid.

6. Bless Duo Fringe—Very similar to BeyoncĂ©’s tasseled glasses that were featured in her Diva music video, these are gold-fringed aviators—the perfect combo of the best of both worlds.

7. The Local Firm Shadow—If there’s all the futuristic specs at one end of the spectrum, there’s retro ones at the other end. The Shadow is one of the many throwback designs to come out recently and this specific one is inspired by the technology and music of the ’80s.

8. Ray-Ban Clubmaster—The extremely great news is that Ray-Ban is re-releasing their iconic frames from way back in the ’50s. Everyone who’s anyone is been seen in recent sightings sporting classic wayfarers and it’s time you do, too.

9. Miu Miu 13HS Gloss—With violet lenses, these ’50s-inspired round frames are edgy by today’s standards but remain retro and feminine.

10. Aviators—No brand-naming here because all of them (from Oakley and Ray-Ban to DKNY and DvF) have their own versions. If there’s one pair that you simply have to have, make sure they’re aviators.
